Nikki, you are a woman after my own heart!!! I can't tell you how much! I found you through Valerie's blog, and am so glad it lead me here! I live in California, amongst the strawberry fields of coastal Monterey. I have taken a great interest in bees of all kinds over the past few years... especially since the Colony Collapse Syndrome has appeared. I am an avid gardener, and plant as many herbs and flowers as I can that attract bees. My family all knows about how I pick up and count the number of dead Bumble Bees I pick up and count while on walks down to the beach. There are large numbers that lose their lives after the weekly spraying of the strawberries. I wish I could find their nest and somehow help to protect them! They are beautiful, and your photos are wonderful! Isn't it amazing that they can even fly? They are so fat and gangly that it seems an unlikely proposal to fly! LOL Anyway, I'm getting too wordy here, but thank you for all the beauty of your blog! Vicki
I'm in charge of trying to reintroduce the 'Short-haired' bumblebee to the UK. Although extinct in the Britain, this species (Bombus subterraneus) is alive and well in New Zealand, so we're trying to bring it back. You can follow my progress here...
