A major new conservation project has begun in Carmarthenshire to protect some of the UK’s most threatened and beloved bumblebee species, with local communities at the heart of the effort.
Cynefin i Wenyn, a three‑year initiative led by the Bumblebee Conservation Trust and funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, will work to restore and reconnect vital habitats for bumblebees on the coast from Llanelli to Cydweli. The project focuses in particular on the rare Moss carder bumblebee, one of several vulnerable species still found in Carmarthenshire.
Of the UK’s 24 bumblebee species, eight are listed by the UK government as conservation priorities due to long‑term population decline. Wales supports seven of these priority species, and some of the rarest are found on the coast, making the area invaluable for their survival.
The project will operate across 15 key sites, creating more, high‑quality, better‑connected coastal habitat to help bumblebees build resilient populations. But the conservation project’s success will also rely on local involvement.
Community participation is central to Cynefin i Wenyn, with a strong focus on supporting people who may face barriers to accessing nature. Residents, community groups and local stakeholders will be invited to get involved in practical conservation tasks, surveys and awareness‑raising events. Training will be offered to help people identify and monitor bumblebee species, lead local activities and develop long‑lasting skills that benefit both wildlife and the wider community.
By empowering people to create and care for pollinator‑friendly spaces, the project aims to leave a lasting legacy of stewardship and connection to nature across Carmarthenshire.

Thanks to National Lottery players, we will be able to protect threatened bumblebee species on the Carmarthenshire coast by creating and enhancing their habitats and by empowering people to actively participate in conservation efforts.
“This is fantastic news for bumblebees on the Carmarthenshire coast. By combining habitat restoration, citizen science, and community skill‑building, this project will give us a clearer understanding of the distribution and abundance of threatened species – and ensure local people are leading the way in protecting them.”

Rhoi prosiect pwysig ar waith i helpu cacwn Sir Gaerfyrddin i ffynnu
Mae prosiect cadwraeth pwysig newydd ar waith yn Sir Gaerfyrddin i amddiffyn rhai o rywogaethau cacwn hoff y DU, gyda chymunedau lleol wrth wraidd yr ymdrech.
Bydd Cynefin i Wenyn, menter tair blynedd dan arweiniad Ymddiriedolaeth Cadwraeth Cacwn a ariennir gan Gronfa Dreftadaeth y Loteri Genedlaethol, yn gweithio i adfer ac ailgysylltu cynefinoedd hanfodol ar gyfer cacwn ar yr arfordir o Lanelli i Gydweli. Mae’r prosiect yn canolbwyntio’n benodol ar y gardwenynen y mwsogl brin, un o sawl rhywogaeth mewn perygl sydd i’w cael hyd heddiw yn Sir Gaerfyrddin.
O’r 24 rhywogaeth o gacwn y DU, mae wyth wedi’u rhestru gan lywodraeth y DU fel blaenoriaeth cadwraeth oherwydd dirywiad hirdymor yn y boblogaeth. Mae Cymru’n cynnal saith o’r rhywogaethau blaenoriaeth hyn, ac mae rhai o’r prinnaf i’w gweld ar yr arfordir, sy’n golygu bod yr ardal yn amhrisiadwy ar gyfer eu goroesiad.
Bydd y prosiect yn gweithredu ledled 15 safle allweddol, gan greu mwy o gynefinoedd arfordirol o ansawdd uchel, sydd wedi’u cysylltu’n well, i helpu cacwn i ddatblygu poblogaethau gwydn. Ond, bydd llwyddiant y prosiect cadwraeth hefyd yn dibynnu ar gyfranogiad lleol.
Mae cyfraniad cymunedol yn ganolog i Cynefin i Wenyn, a fydd yn canolbwyntio ar gefnogi pobl a allai wynebu rhwystrau i gael mynediad at fyd natur. Gwahoddir trigolion, grwpiau cymunedol a rhanddeiliaid lleol i gymryd rhan mewn gorchwylion cadwraeth ymarferol, arolygon a digwyddiadau codi ymwybyddiaeth. Cynigir hyfforddiant i helpu pobl i adnabod a monitro rhywogaethau cacwn, arwain gweithgareddau lleol a datblygu medrau hirhoedlog a fydd yn fuddiol i fywyd gwyllt a’r gymuned ehangach.
Drwy rymuso pobl i greu a gofalu am fannau sy’n gyfeillgar i beillwyr, nod y prosiect yw gadael etifeddiaeth barhaol o ofal a chysylltiad â byd natur ledled Sir Gaerfyrddin.
