How do I rescue a trapped bumblebee?

Buff-tailed bumblebee (Bombus terrestris) on buddleia

Bumblebees and other insects can get trapped in conservatories, greenhouses, and polytunnels, or against windows as they tend to fly upwards, towards the light, to escape. They don’t realise that the glass or plastic is stopping them and they will continue to try and escape through it.

If you encounter a trapped bumblebee, try the following actions to help it escape back to the outdoors:

  • Open any nearby windows.
  • Use something soft to gently herd the bumblebee to the window opening if needed.
  • Use a piece of cardboard and a cup to gently contain the bumblebee so it can be released outdoors, near to flowers if possible.
  • For bumblebees who are out of reach, try using a child’s fishing net to gently catch the bumblebee. It’s best to hold this close to the bumblebee and allow them to crawl on to it.
  • Avoid trying to catch a bumblebee in flight as this might cause damage.

If you can, it’s best to try and prevent bumblebees getting trapped in the first place. A door screen or lightweight curtain can help prevent them entering the space to start off with.
